(1) rather than 毋寧...／還不如：
He is a writer rather than a scholar.
說他是個學者，「毋寧」說他是個作家．
(2) 「更確切」：
I should rather think so. 我「確」信如此．
(3) 「相當」：
It is rather hot in here. 這裡的天氣「相當」熱．
(4) 「（反）而」（當連接詞用）：
It wasn't a help, rather a hindrance.
那不是幫忙，反而是妨礙．
